The rarest Vreneli release is the 1925 100 franc coin, of which only 5,000 were ever produced

The name “Vreneli” is actually an informal name which refers to the entire line of Swiss gold legal tender. The actual name (in English) is the Helvetia Head. The Vreneli were only minted and issued between the years of 1897 and 1936, then in 1947 and again in 1949. These issued coins were also affectionately known as “Swiss Miss” because of the female motif that was placed on the coin.

All Vreneli were minted in .900 millesimal fineness. The coins were minted in the face values of 10, 20 and 100 Switzerland francs. All Vreneli were minted at the Swiss Mint at Bern and the die engraving was performed at the mint in Paris. All true Vreneli gold coins are marked with a “B” from the Bern Mint.

Although all Vreneli were minted 90% pure, they have different official sizes and weights. The 10 franc piece has an official weight of 3.23.g. The 20 franc piece has a weight of 6.45 g.

Over 61 million total Vreneli were minted over the course of their life; however, certain issues of Vreneli are more rare than others. The rarest release is the 1925 100 franc coin, of which only 5,000 were ever produced. The most numerous release is the 20 franc coin; however, the 20 franc coin still has value to numismatists although it is popular as bullion.

The 20 franc denomination is so numerous because of its use as currency for France in 1803. The minting was commissioned by Napoleon himself and remained in use until World War I. So many countries around what is now the European Union used the 20 franc coin that it is now known as the “euro before the euro.”

The name Vreneli has roots in the mythology of Switzerland, appearing in stories of the famous character William Tell. The name is also said to be a derivation of the female effigy in the coin which is called Verena, a symbol of the Confederation of Switzerland.

The Pricing of the Switzerland Vreneli Gold Coin

A few mintings of Vreneli coins have become quite highly demanded because of their relative rarity, among them the 1925 100 franc coin and the 1903 and 1904 mintings of the 20 franc coins. Among the 1903-1904 20 franc releases, reputable coin grading services have placed less than 20 coins in each grade. In contrast, the 1926 release has over 200 coins that have been so graded, although this might be due to the relative popularity of the 1926 release among collectors.

The 10 franc pieces are much more prevalent in common circulation. Re-strikes were produces for the 1935 minting and the 1947 minting, detracting from their rarity within the marketplace.
